Why It Matters

What a Name Change Involves

It is not just a form. Changing a company name normally requires a shareholder resolution, and the new name has to be one Companies House will accept.

Resolution Drafted

The shareholder resolution that sits behind the change, prepared for you.

Sensitive Words Flagged

Some words and expressions need approval or are refused outright. We flag them early.

Brand Alignment

Your registered name matched to the brand you actually trade under.

Filed For You

Submitted to Companies House with the resolution attached.

New Certificate

The certificate of incorporation on change of name relayed to you on issue.

Avoid These

Common Mistakes We See

Rebranding before the name is approved

Printing materials and buying signage before Companies House registers the change is an expensive order to do things in.

Assuming a company name is a trademark

It is not. Registering a name at Companies House gives you no trademark rights in it.

Forgetting everything downstream

Bank, HMRC, contracts, invoices, platforms and website all reference the old name and need updating.

Companies House decides whether a proposed name may be registered. Names too similar to an existing registration, or containing sensitive or restricted words, may be refused or require approval. A registered company name is not a trademark and does not by itself give you rights to the name — trademark protection is a separate matter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know the new name is available?

We check it against the Companies House register before you commit, and flag anything too similar to an existing name or containing sensitive or restricted words. Companies House makes the final decision.

Do I need shareholder approval?

Normally yes — a company name change usually requires a shareholder resolution. We draft it as part of the service.

Does changing my company name protect the brand?

No. A registered company name is not a trademark and gives you no rights to the name as a brand. Trademark registration is a separate service and a separate legal right.

How long does it take?

We prepare everything within a working day or two. Companies House then processes the change on their own timeline and issues a new certificate of incorporation on change of name.

Does my company number change?

No. The company number stays the same for the life of the company. Only the name changes, and the company itself continues as before.

What do I need to update afterwards?

Your bank, HMRC, contracts, invoices, website, platforms and any licences. We give you a checklist, but the updates with third parties are yours to make.
